Walking briskly, Seregil made it to the poor quarter in no time, casually pulling up his hood and slouching as he strolled through the backstreets and alleyways to his destination; an out of sight entrance to the sewers. Leaning against a nearby wall, he subtly glanced around for a few moments, making sure the coast was clear. The last thing he needed right now was to be followed in by a bunch of thugs, or worse yet, whoever was behind all this mess.

Happy with his apparent lack of company, Seregil set off through the wretched tunnels for a second time, digging into his pocket to find the lightstone he’d dropped in there earlier. Now able to see where he was going, he kept his head low and footsteps light as he found the correct route to retrace his steps from the previous night. The faie was pretty familiar with the layout of the sewers under the city, but as he continued walking, he couldn’t help but question if he’d taken a wrong turn. Studying a crossroads, he tried to correct himself, soon setting off in right direction.

Approaching the area, he paid closer attention to his surroundings, shielding the lightstone as he listened out for company a tunnel over from his objective. There didn’t appear to be any sound, not even rats nearby. Edging around the corner, he flashed the light across the darkness, illuminating a tragically empty tunnel. The corpse was gone. Stopping where he was, Seregil began inspecting the ground for signs of the scavengers or gaterunners. Fortunately, the lead had had the decency to die on dry ground. There were only two sets of dirty footprints; his own, which were easy to match up with the boots he was currently wearing, and another set which would have to had belonged to the corpse. ‘Unless he learned to hover’, the faie thought with a hint of amusement.

Getting a closer look now, he could make out the gruesome stains the corpse had left behind and what looked like more footprints leading off to a different section of the sewers. It was hard to tell as they were pretty smeared, but he could swear they were the same as other prints he saw by his own. They were definitely the same size, but that aside, if someone had come down here to collect the body, there would surely be another set of prints leading into the tunnel, which there definitely wasn’t. “Oh, I don’t like this..” He muttered quietly to himself, swallowing hard.

Just at that moment, he found himself tensing up in alarm, readying for attack as a blue light flashed up before him. Ducking away from it slightly, it took him a moment but he quickly calmed himself as he recognised it as one of Nysander's message spheres. With a deep breath, he reached for it, listening to the message it held. ‘Micum? What in Billairy’s name is he doing here?’ he questioned, taking one last look around for anything he may have missed.

Eying up the footprints that lead through to a different tunnel system, he toyed with the idea of following them…Chances are, they would just lead to the surface anyway, but it would be better if they knew, and before any gaterunners trampled over the prints, obscuring them completely.

He was right; the second sets of footprints simply lead to another exit not too far away. It came up just behind an old tavern which didn’t much look like the hiding place for a walking corpse. Looking around, Seregil saw the them disappear into a nearby alley, where they were trodden out by countless other prints and scuff marks. ‘Worth a shot’, he thought, not really having expected to find the animated corpse of his lead casually sitting around with an ale in hand.

With that, he hoped he’d been wrong and that Alec was having more success than he was…. But something in the back of his mind told him his findings were correct as he set of towards the Oreska, losing his jacket along the way.

Walking in the opposite direction, mostly to prevent attention being drawn to them, the young blonde made his way to the charnel houses. If their guy had turned up anywhere, it was most likely here. Opening the door, Alec stepped into the building. The first room was plain, evidently just a sitting room in the front, though it was just as dingy as the next few rooms he walked through. There were few people around, mostly the odd person looking for a missing loved one, there was a soldier stood by the door of the second room. Alec subtly pulled his hood up, passing the soldier. Said soldier barely glanced at the young man as he walked passed. He was most likely focusing on other matters as he stopped one of the few workers who kept the house. Moving on, Alec continued to look through the bodies that filled the rooms.

After a while, the young blonde decided to call on one of the workers himself. Stopping a rather young but tall looking man, he described their guy. The man seemed short of patience but had smiled to Alec almost pitifully. Though the man was tall, he was very lanky, his features were hard edged, his dark hair cropped short and his dark brown eyes had dark shadows underneath.

“Do you think there’s any chance he might’ve been brought in?”. The man paused for a moment in thought before gesturing for Alec to follow. “If there’s a chance, it’ll be the last room…anyone brought up from the sewers is taken through to there.”
Following the man in, Alec noted that this room was smaller and had a lot less people in than the other rooms. After inspecting each body, he sighed softly to himself, shaking his head to the man as he walked passed and back out, he noticed that the soldier from the second room was no longer here. He must have found who he was looking for…

Once outside, he couldn’t help but breathe in the “fresh” air. As much as he liked being on Watcher business, he didn’t think he could have handled staying in that building for longer than necessary. The smell alone was enough to bring up his breakfast.

Making his way back through the town, making sure to stick to the backstreets, Alec decided to pass through to the slightly poorer side, in hopes of finding some information from the gaterunners. If he could speak to a few, maybe he could get somewhere in what was beginning to be a bit of a wild goose chase. Seregil had marked as several places where they tended to lurk, he need only go to one spot to hopefully receive some useful information, otherwise he had no idea where else to look. If it came down to that, he would have to count on Seregil’s own search.

Just as he was going to turn onto the final alleyway leading through to his destination, Alec heard voices, he slowed, moving into the shadows, hand moving to wrap around the hilt of his sword. As soon as his fingers touched the weapon he heard one of the voices break off into a shout. Startled, he peered slightly around the corner. He was surprised to see the soldier from before, with his hand clasped around the throat of a boy no older than 10, his other hand resting against his sword ready for any sudden movement. A few feet away stood two gaterunners appearing more than a little distressed.

Hand clasped firmly around his own weapon now, Alec kept a close eye on the group, watching as the situation escalated.

The soldier seemed past enraged as he seemed to pulled the boy he held about like he was a rag doll, almost holding the boy so his feet were off the ground. “I won’t ask again, I want to speak to the leeches that moved him!” The gaterunners stumbled over each other to get a word in. It appeared that Alec had appeared at just the right moment otherwise he might have missed such an exchange. It would seem Seregil and I aren’t the only people looking for this man, he thought just as he heard their lead’s name uttered by the soldier. This appeared to confuse the gaterunners more and one of them stepped forward in panic and rage, causing the soldier to pull the young lad he held ever closer, hand tightening around the boy’s neck as his other hand move as if to unsheathe his sword.

At a loss, Alec stepped back slightly, he wished he had brought his black Radley with him, but this would only cause more trouble and draw too much attention to himself. It was obvious these two gaterunners knew nothing and probably wouldn’t be able to help even if they wanted to. This brought on a new wave of defeat and worry to Alec’s thoughts. If they hadn’t found him, then who? Surely, they would have found the man by now? Shaking off the thoughts he peered back round again, perhaps Seregil had found the man, it was the only explanation he had left. However, one thing was evident, this man had seen the body, perhaps even seen Seregil, but if he had and seemed so curious as to where it had gone, then why had he not taken care of such a thing himself? The young faie’s thoughts were replaced with confusion.

Drawing his attention back to the situation at hand, Alec noted that while he’d been in his own head the soldier’s rage had quelled slightly, he also noted another gaterunner, much older had appeared and had talked the man down into releasing the boy. Breathing a quiet sigh of relief Alec smiled slightly as the boy stumbled away, his eyes had shown fear but also an underlying hint of defiance. Turning back around to move back into the shadows, Alec hadn’t noticed the slight dip in the cobbles, as he stepped he caught his foot, stumbling forward, he caught himself on a bin stood against the alley wall. The second it happened he had one thought in his mind. Idiot.

It was then that he heard quickened footsteps coming towards the alleyway. Scrambling to stand, Alec bolted down the alley way as soon as he was on his feet. It was then that he heard someone suddenly turn into the alley and a loud shout, indicating had had been the soldier. Running to turn a corner, the young blonde moved into the shadows, panicking as he tried to focus, turning down the backstreets he had just came through. The soldier was hot on his tail as he tried his best to remain as quiet and quick as possible. Pulling himself up and over a low wall, he carried on, hoping to gain some distance. Eventually he reached the end of the backstreets and turned out onto the street, bustling with people. He crossed over to another alley, until he was met with a dead end, his only escape was a small window in the building next to the alley. Huffing with exhaustion, Alec took a running jump, grasping up onto the ledge and pulling his feet up under him, pushing with his legs so he could pull himself up with ease. Quickly glancing as he went, he noted that the room was empty, with a sigh of relief he dropped to one knee, taking in a breath before turning to press against the wall near the window as he heard the oncoming footsteps.

After a few moments of tense silence as Alec held his breath, he heard the mutters of the man as he gave up and turned back. After several moments, the blonde final caught his breath, only to be startled by the sudden bright blue light that appeared in front of him. Letting out a startled gasp, Alec closed his eyes to slow down his quickened heart rate as he realised it was a message sphere from Nysander. He sure knows how to startle someone.

Once he’d listened to the full message, he nodded to himself. I wonder what Micum is doing here. Shrugging to himself he sighed. He was lucky no one had come into this room. Dropping back down out through the window, Alec was more cautious of his surroundings than usual, ensuring he wouldn’t run into that soldier or any more trouble. With one final sigh, he headed off towards the Oreska.” I guess I’ll find out more about all of this when I get there. It must be something important…for Micum to be here.”
