"I do.." Taking a seat, he put his coffee on the desk.. "I think you're very rude.." La Volpe tried keeping a straighter face, but the corner of his lips curled up ever so slightly in a teasing manner.

"... I know when I'm not wanted... Even though I was so kind to you.." The smirk got a little bigger..

"m'sorry. look, it was an emergency, I had to go, I had no choice" O god, how many times was he going to pay for this.
"La Volpe..."he stuttered, too embarrassed to go on.

It was fun watching the younger man squirm and worry; for the most part La Volpe didn't actually care that he disappeared, he was just curious.

"What? It's a bit late for being shy, don't you think?"

"you know i'm no good with people."

That was it, La Volpe couldn't hold back a laugh, it probably wasn't the right thing to do in this situation, but he couldn't help it; this man's awkwardness was strangely endearing.

"You want to thank me for the best night of your life? Or you want a third round?.. Or maybe you just want a coffee?.."

Niccolo groaned into his hands. At least La Volpe was being honest. It was something he appreciated even if it did fuel some of his annoyance. Suddenly he felt like he had to move, impatient he stood and paced the floor so Gil couldn't see his ridiculously red face.
"you laugh at me after accusing me of being rude?, pot calling the kettle black there." he went over and made an espresso for himself.
"Is there something you want me to say? you want me to get on my knees and beg you to forgive me?" he sipped at the too hot coffee scalding his lip in the process. "ow."

La Volpe was a little taken aback... "Forgive you?.. For what?" It had barely even occurred to him that Niccolo could have taken his teasing seriously... Now for the choice between teasing just that little more or being nice and reassuring.

Suddenly the coffee incident flashed through his mind.. "Have you sinned, Niccolo?" He teased.

if it was possible he blushed even more "you know what i mean Gil."
he sighed, this day wasn't going to get better.

“Haven’t you ever wondered how someone as bad with people as I am ended up head of psychology?” he paced up and down the carpet, hands behind his back like he was in class desperately trying to move the subject on

"I have nothing to forgive you for, I was only teasing... Unless of course you mean for something else entirely." La Volpe chuckled.

"Would you stop pacing and sit down?.." He raised an eyebrow, the other seemed especially on edge.. Maybe he'd teased a little too much?

"No, I haven't ever wondered why you're now head of Psychology, Niccolo, because there's no reason for me to question it.. You have the position because you're good at what you do.." His voice wasn't quite comforting, it was more stern and forceful.

“Still i owe you an explanation. Psychology was my second doctorate; it was something I did on the side. What I'm really good at and specialised in was political science. I was good enough to be vice-chair. When the old guy decided to retire they offered me the position, I accepted. But I had a colleague who was jealous. He seduced my wife, which wasn't difficult, and stole my job. They gave me vice chair of psychology instead.”

He couldn't face La Volpe so went to stand by the window and stare out blankly. “About a year after they hooked up they were going through a rough patch and she came to me as a friend, we got drunk, one thing led to another and we slept together.” He leaned against the window. “Big mistake for both of us as it turned out. Mari got pregnant, she didn't know if it was mine or Lorenzo’s so they did a test and it was mine. She.  Was mine. Lorenzo never forgave me that. That was about 3 years ago now. De Medici has been making my life hell since. He's behind this latest promotion. He knows it will tie my hands.” His voice became lower and quieter as he finished.

“This morning, Prima was taken into hospital, suspected appendicitis. She wouldn't stop screaming and lashing out. She wanted to see me. I managed to calm her down so they could operate.” His fingers trailed in the condensation his breath had made on the window. “While she was in pain, all I was thinking of was my own selfish pleasure. I have no idea why i'm telling you this either..."

Listening intently, La Volpe watched Machiavelli as he spoke; quite surprised at the revelations and his willingness to share what troubled him.

He knew the other man was going through a divorce, but everything else was news to him.. "Niccolo.." It was rare, but the older man almost didn't know what to say.

"You know I tease you, but in honesty, you can always talk to me. You don't need a reason.." He lifted himself from his seat and quietly approached the other from behind, placing a hand on his shoulder in a comforting gesture.

"How is your daughter now?" Questioning in concern, he tried not to make a big deal about this being the first time he'd ever heard of her. "Perhaps you should go and be with her? Your work can wait and I can cover where I can."

Niccolo leaned back into the hand. It was nice not to feel so alone.
"Had a text about an hour ago, she's in recovery. Unless she asks for me again, i'm not exactly welcome."

he was silent for a moment just thinking and being with La Volpe but then collected himself. Standing straighter now
"Sorry to have dumped all that on your head, not like you even wanted to know. Ugh, it's all one big fucking mess, and i have a class to teach after lunch, i better do some work. Have you seen Giovanni yet? He came back today."

"Stop... Stop..." La Volpe took Niccolo by the shoulders and turned him so they were facing each other; he looked the younger man straight in the eye.

"STOP... Just stop... You're going to sit down and worry about yourself for a change... There is NO work that is more important than your own well-being, Niccolo.." It seemed pointless saying any of this, because he knew it would only fall on deaf ears.. It always did.

Niccolo just stared at him in mild shock, not only could he not believe he'd just spilled his personal life out to someone who was practically a stranger, he actually seemed to care that he felt crap. Once again he slumped, this time against La Volpes chest. "i hate being so weak."

Wrapping his arms around the smaller body, La Volpe held him.. He hadn't quite expected things to turn out like this, not even his own actions; as a general rule, he made sure not to get too close to anyone because it would just be a hindrance.

"You're not weak, Niccolo.. You've taken on too much on top of your own personal worries, others would have fallen a long time ago under that stress. Weakness is falling down and not getting back up." Squeezing him lightly, he felt a sense of danger in their closeness.

"The best thing you can do, is give yourself time to get back up.."

"Maybe i'm just tired." it was nice just to rest a moment, quiet, peaceful, warm.
He gave La Volpe a quick squeeze round the waist with a sigh.
"thanks for letting me whine. You're a good listener." he untangled himself gently, "i sometimes think i'm going slightly crazy with all this." he forced a laugh out trying to sound normal.
"can i get you a coffee? i think yours might have gone cold..." he gestured to the takeaway cup on the desk.

La Volpe peered over to his now cold coffee and smiled.. "Oh don't worry, that's not my worst coffee experience of the day.." He let the cat out of the bag, hoping it would cheer Niccolo up... "Had a very strange incidence with some marshmallows and what I assume to be some effervescent salt.... I can't for the LIFE of me figure out who would do such a thing..." He stared pointedly at the other man, raising an eyebrow.

"So yes, a coffee would be nice.." His smile returned.

Hastily turning around to the coffee machine there was sign of a small smirk tugging at Niccolos lips as he busied himself making the closest he could to La Volpes normal beverage as a semi apology/thank you.
So the trick had happened after all. He half hoped it had been in front of the whole class.
Making two drinks he went over to the sofa and held one up for Gil.
"Here. Peace offering."
He strangely felt lighter, as if a burden had been lifted.
"thanks."

Taking up the mug, La Volpe grinned back at him..."Peace offering? I suppose I can call it a truce for the time being..." He was half telling the truth, sure he'd stop the pranks for a few days, but that didn't mean he'll stop getting Niccolo flustered.

With his free hand, he tilted the younger man's chin up, planting a brief playful kiss on his lips before sitting on the sofa... La Volpe wasn't really sure about his own actions, but for now, he'd enjoy them... "I'd rather you listened than thanked me.."

Niccolo smiled for a moment.
"Listen?...I admit i'm not very good at that sometimes...okay most of the time." he leaned slightly towards La Volpe, more comfortable now with the other mans company and tried to push the thought that this was all some elaborate scheme to the back of his mind and tell it to shut up.
"sometimes i have to be made to listen."

"Is that so?.." La Volpe lifted the smaller man's chin, looking in his eyes with a smirk before giving him a slightly rougher kiss... "I'll remember that.." As much as he'd like to continue the kiss into something more, it seemed inappropriate.

"But in all seriousness Niccolo, you need to give yourself some time to sort yourself out.. The weak thing to do right now would be to carry on as you are, because I think you already know, that's not possible.."

"mmm, i think you may be right" he licked his lips tasting coffee from the other mans' kiss with a small smile.
"thank GOD Giovanni is back, will make life easier at least. And my workload. Not to mention the novices are very promising, Altair and Malik proved very capable last year, they really should take the oath soon."
He finished his coffee feeling at ease for the first time in ages, things might be crap, but there was at least some good in all this.
"I'm also interested in Ezios' abilities, will be good to put him through his paces."
His mood had picked up, that much was obvious, "But all that aside, thank you."

"Yes, he looks well." La Volpe put his now empty cup down.. "I agree and I think Malik and Altair could handle more responsibilities should the occasion arise. As for Ezio, I think he has more skill to show.."

Getting comfortable, he had some time before his next class and was happy to provide a distraction for the other in the time being. "I believe he may have the vision, much like Altair, from what I've heard from Giovanni.."

With a smile, he looked at the other man, intently.. "You have no need to thank me, Niccolo.. I am here for you as a colleague, fellow assassin and... friend.." For a brief moment he didn't know what to end the sentence with, which was a little embarrassing, not that he showed it.

"I might get Ezio to come with me on an info pick up tonight or tomorrow. Should be interesting if he has the vision."
Noticing Gil wasn't running away any time soon he also relaxed back into the sofa thoughtfully.
"I do have to thank you though, for everything..." a small smirk crept on his lips a second and then was gone. "Best nights sleep in ages..."

"Hm.. Well, it was my pleasure to assist, I assure you.." Eyeing up the other man, he noticed the briefest of smirks.

"Should you...require anymore 'assistance' I'd only be too happy to help.." It would have been a simple thing to lean over to Niccolo and kiss him, to take him now, but La Volpe was curious if he could force the other to make a move.. He needed to learn to think less and act more, after all.
